How To Clean Your Brass Razor
When using your brass razor, exposure to water, air, and human handling causes it to develop a natural patina. That patina is simply oxidation. While many people love the character it adds, sometimes you want your razor looking fresh, clean, and bright again.
If you are using a solid brass razor like our Reserve Razor, the good news is this: restoring it to a near-new shine is simple, inexpensive, and can be done right at home in under ten minutes.
Below is the exact method we use on the shop floor at Proof Razor.
Why Brass Patinas
Patina is a natural reaction between brass and its environment. It does not hurt the razor, affect performance, or shorten its life. Many people prefer the worn-in look and the character it adds. But if you want to reset the clock and bring back that warm, golden brass finish, here is how.
What You’ll Need
You probably already have everything in your kitchen:
- Distilled white vinegar
- Water
- Salt
- Baking soda
- Two small containers
- A microfiber cloth or paper towels
You won't need any special tools or polishing compounds.
Step 1: Mix the Patina Removal Solution
In your first container, combine:
- Equal parts water and white vinegar (about one cup of each)
- One tablespoon of salt
Stir until the salt dissolves. This mixture gently breaks down the oxidation on the brass. Precision is not critical here. This is a forgiving process.
Step 2: Soak the Razor
Drop your brass razor into the vinegar solution and let it sit for about two minutes.
Once removed, begin scrubbing it with a towel or paper towel. You will immediately see the patina lifting off.
If your razor has a heavier patina, give it another quick dip for a minute and scrub again.
Step 3: Neutralize the Acid
In a second container, mix:
- One cup of water
- One tablespoon of baking soda
This neutralizes any remaining vinegar so it does not continue reacting with the brass. Place the razor in this solution for about two minutes.
Step 4: Rinse, Dry, and Admire
Remove the razor from the baking soda solution, dry it thoroughly with a clean towel, and you are done. This same process also works great to restore our all-brass Proof Comb.
You will be left with a bright, high-gloss brass finish that looks almost brand new, ready for another long stretch of daily use.
A Final Note on Care
Brass will patina again over time. That is part of its appeal. You can repeat this process whenever you like, or let the razor age naturally and tell its own story.
